2008 French cycle market info

  • The French cycle market including peripherals (parts and accessories) bore up well in 2008, generating €1,432 million in turnover, practically the same as in 2007.
  • It can be broken down as follows:
    - Specialists: 50%
    - Multi-sport superstores: 39%
    - Food superstores: 11%
  • France still ranks fourth in terms of cycles per inhabitant at a rate of 5.4% owner inhabitants (after Japan, the Netherlands and the US).
  • 3,417,100 bikes were sold (down 3.5%) generating turnover of €897 million, up 1%.
  • 1 in 2 bicycles were bought in multi-sport superstores, 1 in 4 at a specialist’s and 1 in 4 in a food superstore.
  • In terms of value, independent specialists accounted for 53.5% of overall turnover, multi-sport superstores generated 37.5% (up 2%) and food superstores 9% (down 8%).
  • Breakdown of cycle sales into product families:
    - Children’s bikes + BMX: 43.5% 
    - Adults’ mountain bikes: 29% (average price: €314)
    - hybrid bikes: 15% (average price €268)
    - city bikes + electric power-assisted bikes: 7% (average price for city bikes: €250  - electric power-assisted bikes: €955)
    - racing bikes: 5.5% (average price: €1,170)
  • Sales of electric power-assisted bikes are soaring (up 55%), accounting for around 15,700 units, generating turnover of €15 million.§ Sales of cycle parts and accessories account for €535 million (down 2%), broken down as follows:
    - Specialists: 45%
    - Multi-sport superstores: 41%
    - Food superstores: 14%.
